Congragulations with your beautiful website! We wish you a lot of succes with your earthship-plans, but I'm afraid there is a little misunderstanding about the Belgian "Earthship".

In fact there aren't any inhibited Earthships in Belgium. The only "Earthship" is Josephine's Demo-model, wich was built -without permission-  in the back yard of her villa in Strombeek. This demo-model hasn't got any of the systems (pom, wom, etc) of a fully equipped Earthship, and merely shows the structure and the building-method.

The only reason Josephine built this demo-model is because her original plans of a "real" Earthship were torpedoed at the last moment, by the veto of the maire of the small community where it was supposed to be built. Michael Reynolds and his team then proposed to build the demo-model in her garden.

Ofcourse you're absolutely right when you point out that we are all European citizens, and that it should be possible to build an Earthship (with used tyres) in Austria and Germany (and Belgium!). They succeeded in England, Scotland, Spain and Sweden. Projects in France and Portugal are to be launched next year.

Because we didn't succeed to get a permission for an Earthship here in Belgium, we aren't in the position to answer your questions with accuracy. Did you allready contact Darren (Low Carbon Inititive, www.lowcarbon.co.uk/ , Earthship Brighton), Ralf (Växhuset Earthship Sweden www.vaxhuset.se), Lisa and Oscar (Earthship Valencia Spain http://www.oscarlisabuild.blogspot.com/), or Sustainable Communities Scotland, Earthship Fife, Scotland (www.sci-scotland.org.uk ). I'm sure they can provide you with valuable information.

The only study we found regarding the use of used tyres, isn't really compatible with earthships, as it examines the leaching of polluants out of tyres in an aquatic environment. (See attachment) Maybe youl'll find usefull info in it.

Gratuliere zu Eurer schönen Website! Wir wünschen Euch erfolg mit Euren Earthship-Plänen, aber ich fürchte, es gibt da ein kleines Missverständnis bezüglich des belgischen “Earthships”.

Factum ist, dass es keine Earthships in Begien gibt. Das einzige “Earthship” ist Josephines Demo-Modell, welches “schwarz” im Hinterhof ihrer Villa in Strombeek gebaut wurde. Dieses Demo-Modell hat kein einziges System (Strom, Wasser, etc.) eines voll ausgestatteten Earthships und zeigt lediglich die Struktur und die Baumethode.

Der einzige Grund, warum Josephine dieses Demo-Modell gebaut hat, ist, dass ihre eigentlichen Pläne eines “echten Earthships” im letzten Moment durch ein Veto des Bürgermeisters der kleinen Gemeinde, wo sie bauen wollte, verhindert wurde. Michael Reynolds und sein Team schlugen dann vor ein Demo-Modell in ihrem Garten zu bauen,

Natürlich hast Du recht, wenn Du herausstreichst, dass wir alle Bürger der EU sind, und dass es möglich sein sollte, ein Earthship (mit gebrauchten Reifen) in Österreich, Deutschland (und Belgien!) zu bauen. Sie waren erfolgreich in England, Schottland, Spanien und Schweden. Projekte in Frankreich und Portugal sollen nächstes Jahr abgeschlossen werden.

Weil wir keinen Erfolg dabei hatten, eine Baugenehmigung hier in Belgien zu bekommen, sind wir nicht in der Position, Eure Fragen präzise zu beantworten. Die einzige Studie, die wir bezüglich der Verwendung von gebrauchten Reifen gefunden haben, ist nicht wirklich vergleichbar mit den Earthships, sie untersucht die Auswaschung von Verschmutzungen von Autoreifen im Wasser. (siehe Anhang) Vielleicht werdet Ihr es als brauchbare Info empfinden.
